Psychological Counseling

The factors likely to cause excessive weight should be examined before starting to lose weight. Underlying psychological processes have an impact on these factors. That’s why people need psychological support when they are trying to lose weight.
Obesity causes depression, stress disorders, sleeping disorders, various sexual dysfunctions. The problem that damages the life and functions of the person is the loss of self-esteem. As a result, the relationship of the person with his/her partner is damaged and s/he avoids socialization. It is possible to detect this problem with such tests as “Self-Esteem Scale” and “Life Quality Scale” to be applied by the psychologist.

“Life Quality Scale” test helps finding out to what extent your weight problem negatively affect your functionality.
“Body Perception Scale” test helps finding out your approach to your own body and weight.

As a result, psychological counselling is a must to lose way in the right, determined and healthy way and to ensure not to regain the lost weight. Eating is an emotional reaction in overweight people. These people are not aware of the fact that they are angry, sad, gloomy, etc. and start eating. As a result, they always eat food containing high sugar and carbohydrate. Another point is that eating is a hobby for overweight people. They like not only eating, but also cooking and watching cooking programme and they spend quite a lot of time for these activities. At this point, it might be useful to find new activities for these people and increase the variety of their hobbies. Thus, such people can be prevented from eating a big piece of chocolate cake only for pleasure or feeling better. Though it makes such people feel better in the beginning, then they start feeling guilty. Another important factor when trying to lose weight is that the person should be psychologically ready and motivated for losing weight. Power of thinking, which is very popular in today’s world, can be used at this stage. The person should be able to visualize his/her weakness, be determinate and believe that s/he will lose weight. Thus, diets that start on Monday and are ended on Tuesday can be prevented.

The last stage in losing weight is to actively change eating habits. A dietician should make necessary recommendations concerning this stage. We avoid using the term “diet” on purpose because it invokes the feelings in person that s/he pays a price for it and something s/he loves is taken away from him/her. Instead, using the term “weight control” will have a more positive effect.

To briefly sum up, it is crucial
• To detect the factors underlying excessive weight (eating too much, depression, worries/stress, etc.),
• To determine the eating habits of the person,
• To help the person gain some insights into the relationship between his/her feeling and eating habits,
• To help the person to find new interests and hobbies,
• That the person is determinate to lose weight and believes that s/he will achieve it, and
• That s/he actively changes his/her eating habits in order to lose weight.
After all, psychological counselling is a must to lose way in the right, determined and healthy way and to ensure not to regain the lost weight.
